Did you see the Letterman show last night with Joaquin Phoenix? To go along with his wild unabomber look, he acted like he was totally out of touch. He was not paying attention, gave one word answers and basically looked drugged out. He also recently announced that he was leaving acting to be a musician.
I think it's all an act. I have no idea where he's going with it, but I think that we will find out it's part of some role or prank or whatever. Guess time will tell.

Yes I believe he behaved that way to make it unique, and promote the movie. It was a lot of fun actually!
